South Dakota sales tax: the formula and a worked example

Published · 2 min read

The simple formula for sales tax in South Dakota, how to include local rates, and how to reverse it from a receipt.

Key facts

PlaceSouth Dakota
Sales taxState sales tax
Standard rate on file4.2%
Multiply net price by1.042
Tax share of a gross price4.03%
CurrencyUSD

The formula

Multiply the pre-tax price by the combined rate as a decimal. At the 4.2% state rate, that is the price times 0.042. Add the result to the price for the total.

Worked example

Here is the calculation with sample figures. Change any number in the South Dakota Sales Tax Calculator to run your own.

Worked example: South Dakota Sales Tax Calculator
Price$150.00
Tax rate (%)4.2%
Tax$6.30
Price incl. tax$156.30

Finding the price before tax

To go backwards from a total, divide by 1.042. Subtracting 4.2% from the total gives the wrong answer because the tax was calculated on the pre-tax amount.

Quick reference at 4.2%
