What VAT is and who actually pays it

VAT is a consumption tax. Each business in the supply chain charges it on its sales and reclaims what it paid on its purchases, so the tax that reaches the government is effectively the tax on the value added at each step. The person who carries the cost at the end is the final consumer, because they cannot reclaim it.

In Switzerland the standard rate on file is 8.1%. That is the rate most goods and services fall under, but it is not the only one: many countries apply reduced or zero rates to essentials such as basic food, medicine, books or public transport, and some supplies are exempt altogether.

The shortcut formula

To add VAT at 8.1%, multiply the net price by 1.081. To find the tax on its own, multiply the net price by 0.081. These two multipliers are all you need for quick mental checks, and the calculator applies exactly the same arithmetic.

Reduced rates, zero rates and exemptions

A zero-rated item is still taxable, just at 0%, which usually means the seller can still reclaim the VAT on its costs. An exempt item is outside the system, so the seller charges nothing and generally cannot reclaim input tax either. The difference matters a great deal for pricing, so check which category your product falls into before you set prices in Switzerland.

Records worth keeping

Keep every sales and purchase invoice, the rate applied on each line, and a running total of output tax (charged) and input tax (paid). Most tax authorities expect records to be kept for several years, and tidy records make each return faster and any audit far less stressful.
