FICA taxes explained for contractors

FICA taxes explained for contractors, with a worked example, a checklist and the mistakes to avoid.

Why this matters for contractors

Contractors often have uneven income and expenses, which makes estimating tax in advance especially useful.

Worked example

Here is the calculation with sample figures. Change any number in the FICA Tax Calculator to run your own.

Worked example: FICA Tax Calculator
Gross annual salary$90,000.00
Social Security wage base$184,500.00
Social Security and Medicare$6,885.00
Net amount$83,115.00

FICA taxes: how it works

FICA funds Social Security and Medicare. Employees pay 6.2% Social Security up to the wage base and 1.45% Medicare on all wages, plus 0.9% additional Medicare on high wages.

Employers match the 6.2% and 1.45%.

A second example with larger figures

Scaling the inputs up shows how the result moves. Percentages stay the same, so the tax grows in proportion to the amount it is applied to.

Second example with larger figures
Gross annual salary$270,000.00
Social Security wage base$184,500.00
Social Security and Medicare$15,984.00
Net amount$254,016.00

Using the calculator step by step

  4. Read the result and the formula below it.

Key terms

Tax credit
An amount subtracted directly from the tax bill, worth its full face value.
Standard rate
The rate that applies to most goods and services unless a specific reduced rate, zero rate or exemption applies.
Effective rate
Total tax divided by total income, the average rate you actually pay.
Net amount
The amount before tax is added. On an invoice it is the figure the tax is calculated on.
Exempt supply
A sale that falls outside the tax entirely. No tax is charged and input tax usually cannot be reclaimed.

A quick checklist for contractors

  1. Check the current wage base.
  2. Apply both rates.
  3. Check the additional Medicare threshold.

Common mistakes to avoid

Run your own numbers. The FICA Tax Calculator updates as you type and shows the formula it uses.
