Gross, net and everything in between

Gross salary is the figure in your contract. Net salary is what reaches your bank account after income tax and social contributions such as pension, health or unemployment insurance. In Estonia the exact deductions depend on your income, residence, family situation and employer arrangements.

Worked example

Here is the calculation with sample figures. Change any number in the Estonia Salary After Tax Calculator to run your own.

Worked example: Estonia Salary After Tax Calculator
Gross annual salary€50,000.00
Tax rate (%)15%
Social contributions (%)10%
Income tax€7,500.00
Social contributions€5,000.00
Net income€37,500.00
Monthly net€3,125.00

Use an effective rate, not the top rate

Income tax is usually progressive, so only the slice of income in a higher band is taxed at the higher rate. Your effective rate, total income tax divided by gross income, is almost always lower than your top marginal rate. The calculator asks for an effective rate so you can plug in a figure from a recent payslip or tax return.

Monthly versus annual

Divide the annual net by 12 for a monthly figure, but remember that some countries pay 13 or 14 salaries a year, and bonuses can be taxed differently.

Frequently asked questions

How do I estimate my net salary in Estonia?

Subtract income tax at your effective rate and social contributions from gross pay. The calculator does this in one step.

Why is my effective tax rate lower than my tax bracket?

Because progressive systems tax each slice of income at its own rate, so the average across your whole income is lower than the top rate.
